If you stay on the Côte d’Azur, near Saint Paul de Vence which is famous worldwide, you must visit the lovely little town of Vence.  Old Vence will delight you with its medieval town wall.  As you stroll around the town you'll cross  Place du Peyra with its three fountains and Place du Frêne with its beautiful ash tree (frêne) which was planted in the mid 16th century.   Place Clemenceau  is worth a visit as is the Cathedral whose nave and aisles date from the 11th century.  Don’t miss the Chapelle des Pénitents Blancs in Place Frédéric-Mistral which frequently houses art exhibitions.  Another place not to be missed is Chapelle Matisse also known as Chapelle du Rosaire.  Chapelle Matisse is on the road leading to the village of Saint Jeannet.  Between 1943 and 1948, when Matisse came to stay in Vence, he decorated the chapel's oratory.  You can find out the opening hours at the tourist information office.   Be sure to visit Château de Villeneuve which was renovated in 1992 which also regularly houses art exhibitions.  If you’re in Vence between mid July and mid August, go to the “Nuits du Sud” open air concerts in the Place du Grand Jardin which celebrate world music.  We recommend vacation accommodation in Vence for your holiday in the countryside around Nice.
